This portrait deals with the artist's near-death experience.
Julia Sophia Neundorf, born in 1991 in Thuringia, is an artist who works with figurative motifs and abstract elements of painting. She lives and works in Erfurt. As a child, after a serious accident to her cervical spine, she began to make her first drawings on her plaster cast. After she was able to walk again, her artistic talent was further encouraged at a young age and several publications and participations in international competitions followed. She became a sculptor in 2013 and then began studying art and literature. Since 2019 she has been working in her own studio: Atelier Reservoir. A cultural space in which not only her own work on the canvas is a central theme for her, but also bringing creative people together, curating and organizing exhibitions and conducting creative workshops. The focus of her art is on direct experience, simplicity and leaving questions open: “I'm not really a storyteller - my work is much more of a feeling. There can be a lot of story behind it, but you don't have to know it to understand it. It's just like music. You don't have to know the score of a symphony to enjoy it - you can just enjoy the sounds. There are no mistakes, and I try never to regret a decision I've made. I always emphasize the meditative aspect through the versatile application of paint and am very familiar with many different techniques. It is a continuous, natural flow. So for me, making art is a non-intellectual, body-centered, emotional process. The intellectual part comes afterwards. Color is my primary language, the main composition to each work.”
